Chapter 9 Qur’an and the ‘Great Sacrifice’

Only fifty years after the demise of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the so-called Muslims oppressed his grandson Hussain (as). Under the Caliphate of Yazid, his army forced Husain (as) out of his homeland, surrounded him in the middle of a desert and cut-off water from him and his family and friends. The army of Yazid brutally killed all of Husain’s (as) male relatives and friends. Then they beheaded the grandson of the Prophet (pbuh) and killed him. Even after, they killed him, their torture continued. They snatched the clothes off his holy body, mutilated his body and trampled his holy body with their horses. The army of Yazid plundered and burned the camps, snatched the veil from the granddaughter of Holy Prophet (pbuh), and imprisoned the grandchildren of the Holy Prophet (pbuh).

There is no oppression or tragedy that can compare to the one underwent by the household of the Prophet (pbuh) in Karbala. Through this sacrifice, Imam Hussain (as) revived the true practical Islam by establishing clear criteria between ‘truth’ and ‘falsehood’. Therefore, the remembrance of this ‘Great Sacrifice’, which saved the religion of Allah (swt), is extremely important to those who adhere to the traditions of the Holy Prophet (pbuh). This ‘Great Sacrifice’ was prophesized in the holy Quran in:

Surat as Saffat, 37:104-107

104 We called out to him, ‘O Abraham!

105 You have indeed fulfilled the vision!

Thus indeed do We reward the virtuous!

106 This was indeed a manifest test.

107 Then We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,

Note: In the above verses of the holy Qur’an, Allah (swt) has stated that He (swt) ransomed Prophet Ismael’s (as) life with a ‘Great Sacrifice’, almost all nonShi’a interpreters of the Qur’an have mentioned that the ‘Great Sacrifice’ in this verse refers to a ‘Lamb’. This seems improbable that ‘a life of a Prophet of God can be ransomed for nothing but a lamb?’ Is this, what they value a life of a Prophet (as) for?

Therefore, one must turn to ‘ Ulul Amr’ and ask them for the meaning behind this verse. Imam Ali al-Reza (as) was asked about the interpretation of these verses (37:100-107) and He (as) said:

When Allah (swt) the High, commanded Prophet Ibrahim (as) that he should slaughter instead of his son Ismail (as), the lamb, which had descended to him, he wished that he could slaughter his son Ismail (as) with his own hands, and he had yet to be commanded to slaughter the lamb instead. There occurred in his heart what occurs in the heart of a parent who has to slaughter his dear son by his own hands. So he deserved, due to that, the highest levels of the people of the rewards, upon the difficulties.

So Allah (swt) revealed: O Ibrahim! Who is the most beloved of the creatures, to you? So he (as) said: O Lord! No creature has been created who is more beloved to me than Your Beloved, Muhammad (pbuh). So Allah (swt) revealed to him: So is he more
